Sure, Argentina won the World Cup, with Messi celebrated for scoring two goals, but travelers know the country is about so much more than just soccer. Thanks to its rich culture and beautiful landmarks, Argentina – and Buenos Aires, in particular – has also become the stuff of #couplegoals. Often called the “Paris of South America,” this historic capital is not only an idyllic wedding and honeymoon destination, but also a city filled with surprising spots for a memorable proposal.

The first country in Latin America to legalize same-sex marriage and the only one to pass a comprehensive transgender rights law, Argentina welcomes all couples. In fact, it’s considered the most trans-friendly country in the world.

Getting married in Buenos Aires is a relatively simple process and we’ve found the perfect spots for you, whether you’re getting hitched, popping the question or planning a romantic getaway. And don’t miss the Puente de la Mujer, the Woman’s Bridge, which represents a couple dancing tango and seems meant for posing and proposing.

Even if you’re just visiting Buenos Aires solo, you’re likely to fall in love – with the city itself.

Also in La Boca but on the opposite end of the spectrum is Colón Fábrica at Teatro Colón, a magical warehouse offering a rare behind-the-scenes look at the props and costumes for some of the world’s most famous opera and ballet productions. Imagine proposing on the set of “The Marriage of Figaro” or taking engagement photos on thrones belonging to your favorite royal couple.

Note: You may want to brush up on your opera first to make sure you don’t accidentally get down on your knee in front of a tragedy instead of one with a happy ending.

There are so many great hotels in Buenos Aires for both weddings and honeymoons. Just mention the Hilton Buenos Aires to locals and they’ll nod knowingly and say, “Ah, the lobby.” With its high ceilings and hanging sculptures by renowned artist, Edgardo Madanes, it’s a conversation piece in itself and a great place to take photos. Whatever the size of your wedding, the hotel has spaces both intimate and grand that can be customized to fit your needs.

The Alvear Palace Hotel, acclaimed for its 10 banquet halls, is the site of many of the city’s most important events – and is a luxurious wedding venue. Located in Recoleta, the city’s most elegant neighborhood, it’s also a stunning place to stay, with beautifully appointed rooms and suites.

For a truly bespoke wedding, work with one of the expert planners at Four Seasons Hotel Buenos Aires. They’ll arrange everything at the hotel’s 1920s Beaux Art-style La Mansión, including private tango lessons and professional photography on its impressive marble staircase and in the garden. This is a favorite of A-listers including Paul McCartney and Harry Styles, who you may have seen greeting fans from the imposing balcony of the 7th floor E-lounge.

If it’s famous balconies you’re looking for, check out the Casa Rosada, the pink government building made famous in “Evita.” The Perons often stood on the balcony to give their speeches to the masses and, although they may not be the couple you want to emulate, their union did leave a lasting legacy. Celebrating your love in Buenos Aires will, too.
