Hillsville, Virginia

The safe, charming, and progressive community of Hillsville is cradled by Southwestern Virginia’s beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. The folk are all hardworking and friendly, and extend their open arms to visitors, industry, and businesses. Its downtown area alone has been designated as both State and National Historic District. Tourists can explore the annual Flea Market and Gun Shows, or spend a vacation in the historic site. Located in Carroll County, guests can join the folks in farming the land, climbing the skyward mountains, or floating atop the rivers by boat.

When to Visit

From April through September the city sponsors a traditional mountain dance. Showcased each Saturday, the event draws an audience of at least 300 per week. In October, the VFW Arts and Crafts Show features at least 100 craftspeople and fine artists offering folk art, toys, clothing, candles, photography, glass, wood, and handcrafted jewelry. Festival goers get to learn the stories, meet the artisans, and shop for the best arts and crafts in the region. Food and parking are offered for free. Perhaps Hillsville’s claim to fame lies on its biannual Flea Market. Held during Labor Day and Memorial Day, the largest flea market in America attracts a range of 250,000 to 650,000 visitors. Fairgoers include tourists from South Korea, Africa, and Germany. Other events include the Spring Arts and Crafts Show in April, the Galax Bluegrass and Old Time Fiddlers Convention in August, and Stuart Virginia Beach Music Festival in June.
