If you’re planning a vacation, chances are, you’ve got quite a to-do list. From things to pack in your bag to buying tickets to shows, eating at popular restaurants, hotels you want to stay in, and more, there are a lot of fun things to plan and look forward to!
However, it’s not just the things you need to do that can affect the quality of your trip. Sometimes, it’s the things you don’t do that can have the greatest impact on whether or not you enjoy yourself.
Here are five things you should never do while you’re on vacation to ensure you have the best time possible while you’re away from home.
Drive While Impaired
You should never drive while impaired when you’re near your house. It should go without saying that you should never drive while impaired when you’re on vacation either, but being in a new place, having fun, partying, and staying up late can all impact our judgement in a bad way.
Nearly 30 people in the US die every day in drunk driving accidents. If you are unfamiliar with the area where you’re driving and you’re impaired, you’re more likely to find yourself in an accident. Dealing with the aftermath of a serious accident when you’re supposed to be having a great time on vacation is a nightmare.
Do yourself a favor and never drive impaired while you’re away from home. That includes doing any drugs or alcohol, or even if you hardly got any sleep. If you do, take a cab, call an Uber, or learn the bus or subway schedule instead.
Fly Without Knowing Your Passenger Rights
Flying can be an exciting experience when it’s something you don’t get to do very often. Unfortunately, it’s more likely to be a stressful experience. That’s because airlines don’t make it easy to enjoy yourself.
From canceled flights to overbooking and baggage fees, it’s extremely important to know your rights if you’re flying on an airplane at any point in your travels. It will ensure you know exactly what you can ask for if you find yourself bumped from a flight, as well as what kinds of perks you’re entitled to if you voluntarily give up your seat on an airplane.
Visit a Foreign Country Without Doing a Little Research
There’s no greater thrill for a traveler that visiting a foreign country. There’s nothing like immersing yourself in another culture, as long as you’re aware that that culture comes with different rules, laws, and customs that you aren’t familiar with.
Never visit a foreign country without doing a little research. That includes knowing and understanding laws that could get you in trouble, as well as behaviors and phrases in the local language. That way, you don’t find yourself in trouble with the locals or the authorities for doing something you had no idea was wrong.
Leave Important Information at Home
By all means, make sure you bring extra underwear and comfortable shoes, but packing your bags means more than making sure you have the right clothes and personal care items. It means making sure you have the right documents too.
Important documents you should never leave at home include:
- Passport when traveling overseas
- Copy of your passport, just in case the original gets lost
- Driver’s license
- Proof of medical and/or traveler’s insurance
- List of medications
Just make sure you carry those documents with you. Never place them in checked bags. If you do, and your bags get lost, you could find yourself scrambling to find replacements when you should be enjoying your vacation.
Be Too Busy
You may be tempted to keep yourself busy while you’re on vacation. That includes filling your schedule with fun things to do, but it may also include squeezing in a little bit of time to get some work done—don’t!
Avoid filling your schedule to the brim and don’t work on vacation. By not planning too much to do, you enable yourself to rest and relax so you don’t return home after your trip feeling more tired and drained than when you left. By not checking your email or spending time working, you can truly unplug and return to the office refreshed and ready to get back to work.
There are a lot of things you should do when you’re on vacation, but there are a lot of things you shouldn’t do too! Follow these tips and you can increase your chances of enjoying every possible minute while you’re away from home.
